The Mendocino County Museum has long dreamed of sponsoring a regional Mini Maker Faire in our county to celebrate the creative low-tech and high-tech pioneers who practice "artful ingenuity", our term for the talents and efforts of those who have designed and installed a solar panel, crafted a quilt, created cheese from goat to label, figured out a water pump or restored a stream, engineered a mountain bike, or planted a vegetable garden.
It's a chance to encourage "Maker Mind" and an entrepreneurial spirit in those who are intrigued, but just haven't gotten around to trying something new. And it's a chance to model to and with our next generations just what it takes to live in a DIY (do-it-yourself) kind of county, as well as in the ever-evolving world of avocations and careers that we can only imagine will exist in the future.
The Mendocino County Mini Maker Faire is definitely a do-it-yourself project for the Museum and our partners, and we can use all the help we can get. We've got two requests right away:
- Are you a Maker? Do you know someone who is? Let us know for our Maker mailing list! We're calling all Makers to tell us about their Maker skills and creations.
- Do you have photos of Makers in action? We're putting this website together before the Faire (where, of course, we will get lots of photos). Send them in & we'll select some to share!
Next post we'll tackle: What's a Maker Faire? - whether mini or massive
